Reflection Essay
I remember first stepping into Aclc in first grade which seems so long ago. I used to find the school very odd at its untraditional approach for learning however the longer time passed the more I grew to love Aclcs approach to learning.
Aclc has taught me many life skills that I plan continue using such as learning to use all of the resources I have to help me succeed. My time at Aclc has also taught the value of being academically responsible, how to work together with others efficiently, and proper ways to react when encountering a problem.
B. RESPONSIBILITY, SOCIABILITY
One of the personal qualities that I’ve developed during my time at ACLC is Responsibility. I developed this quality of mine through Aclc’s system of free periods. In my first few years at Aclc I completely wasted my free periods instead of completing important assignments I would waste that time messing with my friends and getting in trouble. I cared about my grades, but I just believed free periods were just hours where you can do whatever you want. It wasn’t until I talked to my cousin that I realized time is something you have to take responsibility for in itself. From then I started to use my free periods to actually work on assignments. I decided to take responsibility of my time by declining to hang out with my friends for a while Whenever I had a project to complete. It was because of this new approach I took to my goals that I ended up placing 3rd at the school science fair that year, It was then that I learned taking responsibility for your own goals is the way that you'll be able to achieve them.
Self-esteem is also another attribute of mine that I learned to grow. Before I started growing my self-esteem I always believed that the reason I had bad grades was that I just thought I was too dumb to understand certain concepts. That all changed when my M.A.P tests showed that I had a high reading level it was then that I realized if I practice any subject enough times like I did with reading I would get better at those subjects and better grades. This proved to be true when I had to complete a Biology research paper that was worth a lot of points, I wasn’t nervous though because I learned that if I put enough time and effort on the project I would get a high grade. I ended researching for so many hours but once I completed the assignment I had no worries because I put enough effort into it, I ended up getting 100% on that assignment. It was then that I learned talent is nothing compared to effort, with that realization came more confidence because I knew no matter what goal I’m seeking to achieve if I put all my effort into it I will achieve it.
History, Science
One of my favorite classes that I took un AClC was history. My curiosity about the world magnified my love for history. I always enjoyed learning about ancient civilizations, and their culture and religions. One of the biggest reasons I liked history was because of any question I had about modern and society, all I would have to do is look back into history. You can learn a lot about yourself and your family in history it can tell you about your family’s past cultures and beliefs. History has taught me to not make the same mistakes you’ve made in the past.
ACLC has given me a new liking to science. The way ACLC treats science is unlike any other school, during science fairs learners have the freedom to be able to do virtually any science fair project. This allows learners to have the creative freedom to be able to truly express themselves through their science projects. I always enjoyed learning about science from physics to chemistry and even biology my favorite science class. Even when I would struggle in physics I still enjoyed learning about those concepts. My favorite thing about science was the experiments we did, it felt amazing when we would see our experiments being successful. One important lesson science has taught me is never to be afraid to ask for help when creating something because it’s then that your creation could possibly reach its full potential.
KNOWS HOW TO LEARN, PROBLEM-SOLVING
One skill ACLC has really helped teach me is the skill of being able to learn independently. ACLC that me that to be able to learn successfully you'll need to be able to use all the resources you have to help you learn, these resources could be staying behind in class asking for extra help, getting help from your peers, watching youtube videos, and much more. Those lessons I learned taught me how to properly be responsible for my own learning and education. Now when I don’t understand certain concepts I don’t blame teachers and give up instead I use different methods in trying to learn the said concept.
Problem-solving is another skill I learned during my time at ACLC. The learning freedom given by AClC has really helped me to develop the problem-solving skills I have today. In most of the projects I’ve done I always faced obstacles while completing them, however, I’d always find a way to fix the issue or overcome the obstacle. That was the core method of how developed my problem-solving skills. When facing a problem I learned to stay calm and fully assess the situation before finding a way to solve the problem.
PARTICIPATES AS A TEAM MEMBER, WORKS WITH DIVERSITY
Every Member of a team has a role to play and if one member of a team doesn’t complete their task the whole group suffers and doesn’t get to complete the team’s overall goal. That is the lesson I learned from the many group projects I’ve done at ACLC. Being a good team member isn’t just about doing your part and being done it’s also about checking on your team members to see if they need any help with their projects. In a team, everyone needs to play the leader role in some way. I learned from these group projects that putting the bare minimum effort in a group project is selfish because it makes the workload heavier for your team members.
ACLC is the most diverse school I’ve gone to, The first time I walked into the school I was shocked by so many different types of people. Aclcs environment really makes you appreciate others for their differences and cultural backgrounds. I’ve learned so many things from different learners at Aclc, I loved learning about the important aspects of everyone's culture. Working with people from different cultural backgrounds is great because they all have these different and unique approaches to completing the projects, but the greatest thing I saw working with people from different backgrounds is the the way they reacted when they encountered a problem
SHOWS AWARENESS OF TECHNOLOGY, MAINTAINS AND TROUBLESHOOTS EQUIPMENT
Technology is one of if not the most important tools that can be used as a learner. The many projects, papers, and assignments have though me that lesson. Whether it’s doing research about a certain topic or organizing a presentation technology and the internet had the biggest part in helping fully complete these assignments. Technology has really helped me with tests and quizzes also such as if I had an assessment coming up I would use Quizlet to help me study or youtube to help me further understand a math concept. Using technology to complete certain tasks not only makes the task easier to complete but it also could help you perfect the task you’re trying to complete such as writing essays using technology that could help you fix grammatical errors.
Maintaining the health of your technological equipment is very important as a student. Horribly maintained equipment can affect your learning ability. One way you can maintain your technological equipment is by installing ad blocker software on your computer. These not only protect your computer from ads but it’s one of the ways you can prevent viruses from infecting your computer. Another way you can maintain your equipment is by checking your downloaded materials and deleting the unwanted files this could improve the performance of your computer.
